What is the Basic Process of Metalcasting?

Metalcasting, in a simple summary, is where manufacturers pour liquid metal into molds and then let it harden over a period of time into a certain shape. Of course, this is only the beginning part of the process, and there is much more to be done. The beauty of this process is that you can use it for so many different needs and it’s very versatile. It’s also a skill that requires a lot of technical education because it can be used is so many different fields.

The molds that are used for liquid metal have to be able to withstand very high temperatures, so there are certain materials that are more preferred, such as limestone, ceramic and wood. Normally, wax, sand or clay is used to shape these materials, so the end result is the right design. In order to use some of these pieces as individual units, some of the molds snap together to create matching ends.

Based on the needs for the end product, the foundries where the metals are melted create a place for particular metals to be mixed, so the desired end result can be achieved. Every time an alloy is created, it adds another level of skill to work with the new product, so this is something a skilled operator needs to do.

Once the metal has hardened into the preferred shape, then the product must be finished through the process of grinding, sanding and polishing. Each material that is mixed will require its own amount of grinding and this is something that must be determined by the manufacturer.

There are some cases when a home setup can be used to do this procedures, as long as the project is small enough. If someone is going to pursue this on a small setup system like this, caution should be taken so that accidental fires don’t get started. The first thing you should do before putting any information to use that you find online is to read through the safety precautions at least a few times, in order to prevent accidents or injuries.

Do this without injury and by preventing accidents by watching videos online that people post of various metalcasting processes. You can get a ton of great information from the American Foundry Society if you contact them and see what resources they offer.

This field gives an individual a lot of opportunity to create products that are used in so many areas and you can learn as much as you wish to pursue. This is just the beginning summary of what metalcasting is and how you can understand it, but there’s a lot more to be learned if you’re interested. Metalcasting is a decades old industry and it will continue to remain for the foreseeable future.
